Why blonde hair turns brassy—and what toner can do
Understand unwanted warmth, fading and the difference between a toner refresh and further lightening.
By Styled by Surpreet ·

Brassiness is unwanted yellow, orange or warm colour showing through a blonde or lightened result. It does not describe every warm shade: honey, caramel and golden blonde can be intentional choices. The question is whether the warmth still matches your goal.
Why does warmth show up?
Lightening reveals underlying warm pigment. As the balancing colour fades, that warmth may become more noticeable. Sun exposure, washing and swimming can also affect how a colour looks over time. The cause is not always the same, so a photo and colour history are more useful than choosing a product by its bottle colour. [1]
What can toner change?
Toning adjusts the visible shade. Colour theory helps a stylist choose pigments to counter unwanted warmth—for example, violet for yellow. A toner must suit the hair's current lightness and condition. It is not a promise that any orange or dark area can become pale blonde without another type of service. [1]
Should everyone use purple shampoo?
No. A colour-depositing product should match the unwanted tone and the intended finish. Ask which product, how often and when to stop. More frequent use is not a substitute for identifying why the result has changed. Bring your current shampoo and treatment names to your appointment.
What should you ask for when booking?
Compare your hair in consistent daylight and describe the change. Is it too yellow, too orange, too dark, or simply less bright? Also mention whether the roots have grown out. A change in tone and a change in the placement of highlights are different requests.
A useful message is: “I like my current light pieces, but the ends look warmer than I want. Should I book a toner refresh?” Include a recent photo with no colour filter.
Protecting your colour between visits
Sun exposure can fade colour and contribute to dry, brittle hair. A hat offers practical protection outside. [2] Ask for an aftercare routine that fits your scalp, texture and washing habits rather than a fixed schedule copied from someone else's routine.
Plan a refresh
Explore Toner + style in the service menu, or ask Surpreet which appointment matches your current hair. The aim is a shade you enjoy wearing, whether that is cool, neutral or deliberately golden.
