Strand tests before hair colour: what they can tell you
Learn why a small hair sample can help plan a colour change—and why it is different from an allergy test.
By Styled by Surpreet ·

A strand test tries a planned colour process on a small sample of hair before treating the full head. It helps assess the likely colour result and processing response. It is a planning tool, not a guarantee of a particular result everywhere.
What can a strand test show?
The sample gives a preview of how a product behaves on your existing hair. Hair thickness, condition and earlier chemical treatments can affect colour uptake and timing. Testing is especially useful when the starting point is uncertain. [1]
What information should you bring?
Tell Surpreet about previous lightening, permanent colour, henna, perms, relaxers and smoothing treatments. Include home products and salon services, even if they were applied a long time ago. A photograph of a product label is useful when you cannot remember its name.
Bring your inspiration image and say which part matters most: the shade, brightness or contrast. This makes it easier to discuss alternatives if the test suggests the original goal needs a different plan.
Is a strand test an allergy test?
No. A strand test assesses hair and colour response. An allergy alert test follows the colour manufacturer's separate skin-testing instructions. Having coloured your hair before does not remove the need to follow those instructions. [2]
Tell your stylist about any previous reaction. Do not treat a successful strand test as proof that a product is safe for your skin. If colouring has caused a rash, swelling, burning or itching, seek medical advice before proceeding. [3]
Will everything be completed during a 10-minute consultation?
The free consultation booking at Styled by Surpreet is 10 minutes and includes a strand-test assessment at the salon. The product's processing and testing requirements may take longer than the conversation itself. Confirm any additional waiting time and when the colour service can be booked; do not assume every test result is available in ten minutes.
